WWII

With the commemoration of D-day last week I thought these pics might have added poignancy. The first is a montage showing a scene during and after the war.  I believe the setting for this was Egypt, with a tour-bus replacing army vehicles in the post-war scene.

The second looks like it was painted on a similar background, also unframed, possibly from a series. This always reminds me of a James Bond scene; the white snow-trooper outfits, and the slightly outlandish snow-wagons pulling the troops up the mountain towards the battle.

Family Fortunes

I only briefly knew my grandfather. He died when I was about 8, which, as you can imagine, I can’t remember too much of before then. He was a motoring journalist and stoked my interest in cars. His brother was an artist who in World War 2  painted some of the classic propganda posters of the era. After the war he turned to painting cars, mostly racing cars, but also some fairly ordinary scenes of the period. He had a great style i think – quite technical, but with some artistic vision as well.

I’ve recently started looking at collecting images of all his work. Thought I’d share a couple each day;
