Derringer..a cool moped?

Bit late to the party on this one – but I came across a few snaps of a bespoke moped… suspend your chuckles for a minute because the brainchild behind Derringer cycles is Adrian Van Anz, who has a distinguished career designing and creating customised ‘stuff’ for the big names in LA. And he’s only 30…

His ‘cycles’ are an homage to the board track racers of the turn of the 20th century – with a modern Honda drivetrain and the benefit of contemporary components. There’s a claim about ‘hybrid-drive’ for these beasts; essentially it’s a tiny engine with some pedals that can help you get up the hills – something Euro and Japanese mopeds had years ago; apparently they were hybrids; who knew?

The aesthetic of the Derringer is something you’ll either love or hate. It’s pretty sparse without overly-styled dummy panels, or hydroformed tubing, in fact it almost looks like they’re missing something – where’s the rear suspension? But that’s the point…and that’s why this is actually a relevant and contemporary product. If you top out at 35mph you don’t need heavy suspension components, a chunky tyre will do. Keeping the weight down means you can use smaller and lighter brakes, which in turn saves weight. It’s the Lotus philosophy of ‘added lightness’.

The icing on this cool cake is the price – $3500. Don’t fancy dodging London’s pot-holes on one… but with the Californian sun in the sky this would make a sweet city ride.

Happy New Year to all, back soon in 2010!

No..I know that Stefan Lamm rated and chose the winner, apparently the clay is being shown to various bosses and was in Merkenich. Hope to get a look at it soon though – will post something if I get any info.
