Bussed-up

Watching the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics (got bored during the closing one…strangely enough you can have tooooo much precision marching) anyway, it reminded me of the competition to redesign a London bus here.. The official British handover was unfortunately a bit ‘weak’ after the scarily impressive Chinese, with a transforming London bus (gasp) and david beckham kicking a ball into the crowd…amazing. Unfortunately the bus bits that transformed didn’t retract meaning that some dude had to walk in front of the bus giving the driver hand signals – down a bit, left a bit…class.

Anyway, it’s a cool opportunity to design an icon. £25,000 up for grabs too…Personally I hope that the winning entry isn’t too retro – it’s nice to have some design heritage to fall back on but design can’t keep looking over its shoulder. If i get some time I’ll be entering and posting right here.

Now the actual games are over i’m bereft of sporting tv. At least we got more medals than the Aussies – bonus!

Loving The Streets new track ‘everything is borrowed’..was gonna post here but the youtube quality is well iffy, so seek it out.

Also loving LastFM… it’s been around for a few years and now has evolved to be a tasty way to listen to and explore new music. Well worth checking out.

Slinkachu – bit slow on the uptake with this one; to the point where this was even in a newspaper today, but there’s something about these miniature installations that Slinkachu sets up that strangely takes me back to being a kid. Whatever, the guy’s got a crazy kinda old-fashioned vision;

Had a peek at the Richard Prince exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery. Some great images, a lot of his weird ‘Hood’ series; basically primered bonnets with body-filler. Unfortunately got busted taking pics of various pics. Major bugbear – why stop someone (quite clearly not a professional photographer) taking a snap on their phone? It’s not like i’ll be slling the shots and making money from it. Anyway…the graphic stencil idea’s something i’ve wanted to do since Coventry days;

Tootled along to the London MotorShow. Compared to other international shows this one doesn’t really compare, and also can’t make its mind up as to whether it’s a day out for the kids or a proper new-car-launch industry event. To be honest was most impressed by the classic cars outside – this little Porker caught my eye..

Got down to the BigChill festival last weekend. Highlight was Luke Vibert and Cornelius. Cornelious did a crazy AV set mixing lush Japanese animation with a sound-clash of leccy guitar and 70’s melody. Vibert rocked. The event surprised me by being almost tooo Chilled…not a lot going on, but a fantastic venue.

Weekend trip to Islay with the K-z man, master of whisky and all fine things in life. Toured the distilleries and recieved my MA in whisky studies, all in the space of 48 hours! Laphroig proved the hit for me, a peaty symphony with an exceptionally long finish…apparently.

GM are running an interesting program entitiled ‘I am Next’ which is showcasing design interns work in various formats as they complete their studies. A nice idea, pushing new talent forward and it certainly suggests GM are taking future product very seriously. Check it out here and stay tuned for updates.
